The 1930 Census taken in Smithville, showed the Family Balke, apparently ran a boarding house for 16 men, listed as Quarryman or Rock specialist. It was very interesting to note some of these workers came from Arkansas, Wales, Finland, Italy, Sweden. But it also showed some local men working at the quarry, like Speck, Evan and Earl Hess, Byron Lamb, Lucien McMillian, Oscar Warren and Charlie Murphy.

Most of these men are shown in the 3 pictures below this one.  many years later it was Charlie Murphy's son Billie who donated these pictures to Smithville, handing them at that time to our local Chamber of Commerce.

The picture here shows what is left of the old mine , some 5 miles South East of Smithville

on the East side of 169 Highway on very private property.
